Customs Officers Seize 500,000 Smuggled Cigarettes
Customs officers have discovered 500,000 allegedly smuggled cigarettes and hundreds of counterfeit watches intended for sale in the UK.
The items, worth £100,000 in duty alone, were seized in Bridgend on Tuesday at a storage facility near the town centre.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) also found £6,000 cash in a vehicle.
A 50-year-old man from Pencoed near Bridgend and a 57-year-old man from Birmingham have been arrested and released on bail.
The investigation continues.

£1.7bn recouped as UK 'VAT gap' decreases by 3%
The annual report from HM Customs and Excise has revealed that VAT losses have fallen from 15.8% to 12.9% in 2003/04. This has closed the "VAT gap", the theoretical difference between the possible yield from VAT and the actual receipts received, by nearly 3% and provided an additional £1.7bn of revenue to the exchequer.

Customs officers seized over 26,000 smuggled cigarettes in an operation at Peterhead Harbour on Wednesday. Officers from local detection teams stopped a Peterhead man who had just bought 12,600 duty free cigarettes from the crew of a Russian cargo vessel.
