New Standard Issue Handgun For British Forces

The Ministry of Defence has signed a £9m contract to provide a new standard issue handgun for British forces.

For the first time in more than 40 years the Armed Forces will be given more than 25,000 new side-arms and holsters from Austria's Glock.

The Glock 17 9mm will replace the Browning 9mm pistol, it is lighter and can be fired faster than the gun that has been in service since 1967.

It is more accurate, fires a second faster and its magazines can carry more bullets than the Browning, according to the trials team.

Colonel Peter Warden, from the MoD team, said: "We began to lose a little bit of confidence in its reliability. So we trialled seven different weapons, and got down to the Glock as the best of the bunch."

Troops serving in Afghanistan will be the first to get the pistol.
