Christmas Lunch Food Poisoning Victim Dies

A woman has died and 30 people are ill following a Christmas Day lunch at an east London pub.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) began an inquiry after the Clostridium perfringens bacterium was found in samples from the affected diners.

Della Callagher died two days after eating at the Railway Hotel in Hornchurch.

Mrs Callagher's husband John said he took her to hospital on Boxing Day but is angry doctors told her to go home.

The Clostridium perfringens bacterium is a common cause of food poisoning and affects mostly red meat or poultry.

The HPA said it was rare for a person to die as a result of food poisoning.

A Havering Council spokesman said: "Our initial findings indicate that this seems to be a serious but isolated incident.

"Our officers conducted a second site visit yesterday to gather further evidence and statements from employees."

British Tourist Dies In Suspected Food Poisoning
A British tourist has died with suspected food poisoning at a hotel in northern Italy. Geoffrey Appleyard, 71, from Evesham, Worcestershire died in the early hours of Sunday. His next of kin have been informed and a post mortem is being held. Mr Appleyard was treated by paramedics in his hotel room after becoming ill, but died shortly afterwards.

Calls For Tougher Junk Food Advertising Laws
More than eighty percent of adults believe junk food advertising can make it difficult to feed children healthy food, a new survey has claimed. Consumer watchdog Which? Found 83% of consumers surveyed wanted the government to become more involved in controlling the marketing of unhealthy food to children. In total 2,000 people were questioned.
