Cats Die In Fire At Animal Shelter

Up to 15 cats have died following a fire at a cattery in Staffordshire.

About 30 firefighters were called to Pinetrees Cattery in Huntington, north of Cannock, after the alarm was raised at about 05:30 on Friday morning.

Fire chiefs said they believed 20 cats had been housed at the Stafford Road site at the time. No cattery staff members were injured.

It is thought two or three cats that escaped the blaze have fled into nearby woods.

A further two cats have been taken to a vet suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

An investigation to establish how the fire started is underway, although it is thought the cause was accidental.
