Union leaders reject pay deal for firefighters
Union leaders have overwhelmingly voted to reject the latest package on pay and conditions made by employers to the UK firefighters.
However, Fire Brigades Union (FBU) leader Andy Gilchrist is expected to tell firefighters later today that taking industrial action before the complete cessation of the Iraqi conflict would be counterproductive. Though there are fears that union hardliners may well disagree as concerns about some form of impending industrial action grow.
The union conference had been examining the latest proposals from employers that had been arrived at following a report by Professor Frank Burchill. A report favoured by union leaders but which had met with opposition from employers concerned that the proposals would cost too much to implement.
Government exasperation reached new heights in March when Deputy prime minister John Prescott, faced with a conflict in Iraq, said that he was announcing new legislation aimed at imposing a pay settlement.
The last round of strikes tied up 19,000 troops drafted in and placed on standby to provide emergency cover during the last five rounds of industrial action by firefighters.
