HSBC Launches Jersey Money Laundering Probe

HSBC has issued a statement after the Daily Telegraph newspaper said it was at the centre of a major investigation by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The bank says it is exploring allegations that criminals have used offshore accounts at its Jersey operation for money laundering.

The statement from HSBC said: "We are investigating the reports of an alleged loss of certain client data in Jersey as a matter of urgency.

"We have not been notified of any investigation in relation to this matter by HMRC or any other authority but, should we receive notification, we will cooperate fully with the authorities.

"HSBC remains fully committed to adoption of the highest global standards including the procedures for the acceptance of clients."

Post Office To Launch Current Account
Following a regulator’s claim that consumers are not offered much choice in the UK’s banking market, the Post Office has announced it will launch its own current account. The new account will be provided by Bank of Ireland and is expected to be fully launched in 2014, although some areas will be offered the account within a few weeks.

Banks Fined For Manipulating Exchange Rates
The Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC are among five banks collectively fined £2 billion for attempted manipulation of foreign exchange rates. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has worked alongside the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to fine RBS and HSBC, along with JP Morgan Chase and Citibank in the US.

Six Killed In Jersey Knife Attack
Police in Jersey have launched a murder investigation after six people, including three children, were killed in a knife attack at the weekend. A man, two women and three children were killed in the attack, which happened in a flat in the island's capital, St Helier, around 3pm on Sunday.

Forensic archaeologists searching a former children’s home in Jersey have found two milk teeth. The teeth believed to belong to a young child were found in the Haut de la Garenne, the location under investigation for alleged sexual abuse and violence.

Second Cellar To Be Searched In Jersey
Police searching a former care home in Jersey at the centre of child abuse allegations have reportedly broken into second bricked-up cellar in the building. The search at the Haut de la Garenne building is now entering its third week. Last month, a child's skull was found at the site.
