Justin Welby Set To Become New Archbishop of Canterbury

Bishop of Durham Justin Welby is set to be the next Archbishop of Canterbury, according to reports.

Welby, 56, only became a bishop a year ago when he took up the fourth most senior post in the Church of England.

The Eton-educated bishop will be announced as successor to Dr Rowan Williams as early as Friday, after the Crown Nominations Commission put his name forward to Downing Street, the Telegraph reports.

Dr Williams steps down in December after 10 years in the post.

Bishop Welby, was ordained in 1992, he worked in the oil industry for 11 years before studying theology at Durham. He served as Dean of Liverpool since 2007 then became Bishop of Durham in November 2011.

Man Remanded Over Death Collision
A man charged with causing the death of a father-of-two, has been remanded in custody. Bryan Hardwick, 26, was returning home with his son, daughter and a family friend on Saturday, 11 October after collecting conkers. A Rover 45 vehicle ran him over on the A688 at Bishop Auckland, Co Durham.

Man Arrested Over Holiday Grandmother Death
A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a British grandmother who was found dead in Tunisia. Durham Police say that Pauline Richardson, 64, of Bishop Auckland, was found dead on Tuesday in Port Elkantaoui. A Tunisian man has been arrested in connection with her death.

Drought Conditions Extend Across England
An announcement by the Environment Agency today will say that most of England is now in drought. As the government start planning for long-term water shortages, with potentially disastrous consequences for wildlife and farming, larges areas of the Midlands and southwest England have entered official drought status.

Three bodies exhumed in GP investigation
Post mortem examinations have begun on the bodies of two elderly men exhumed by detectives investigating a former GP charged with murder. The pensioners are understood to have been patients of Dr Howard Martin, who is currently awaiting trial, accused of murdering a patient. A further body is to be exhumed as police continue their inquiries.
