Government's inflation target for this year remains at 2.5%

Gordon Brown has declared a Budget for "economic strength and social justice."

The Chancellor has told the House of Commons that Britain is expected to outperform all the other major industrialised economies in the year ahead.

He shaved his growth forecast for the coming year by half a point - predicting growth of 2 to 2.5% - higher than many City analysts were predicting.

He says Britain is expected to be fastest growing G7 economy in 2003 and that growth overall will rise in 2004 and 2005 by 3% to 3.5%.

The Chancellor has told MPs the Government's inflation target for this year remains at 2.5% and that domestic demand will grow by 3% to 3.5% this year and in 2004.

He says manufacturing output will grow by 0.25% to 0.75% this year and fixed investment expected will grow by 4.25% to 4.75% this year.
