1,300 Expected Jobs Losses As Ford Announce Closures

1,300 jobs are to be lost as Ford announce it is to close its transit van plant in Southampton and a stamping operation in Dagenham – shedding one in 10 of the car maker's UK workforce.

According to Unite the closures are due to complete next summer. Describing the announcement as "disgraceful" the trade union said it represented Ford's 18th site closure in the UK in less than two decades, as well as signalling the end of its last vehicle manufacturing plant in Britain.

One expert described the move as "symbolic", because it ends 100 years of vehicle production by Ford in the UK.

Shop stewards representing Ford's 11,500 staff were told the news this morning by Ford's European boss, Stephen Odell, in a meeting at the company's technical centre in Basildon.

But, it is understood that Ford is offering to relocate 600 staff at Dagenham, which could lower the job loss total.
