4 In 10 Fail National Phonics Reading Test

Official statistics show that 58% of people passed the controversial new national phonics reading test in England.

The test checks six-year-olds' ability to read aloud a mixture of 40 real and made-up words, sounding them out using the phonics system.

Ministers said the check had identified pupils who needed further help in learning to read.

But teaching unions say it risks doing long-term damage to children's reading.

This is because it tests children's ability to decode words using a single method, phonics, rather than their ability to read itself.

Four Game Ban And Fine For John Terry

Chelsea captain John Terry has been banned for four matches and fined £220,000 for racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.

The Football Association found Terry guilty following a four-day hearing.

A statement from Terry's management said he was "disappointed" the FA had reached a "different conclusion" to the "not guilty verdict of a court of law".

Electric Car Breaks Land-Speed Record

A battery-powered car has broken the UK land-speed record for electric vehicles at Elvington airfield near York, its makers have said.

The Nemesis, a heavily-modified Lotus Exige which was originally bought off eBay, clocked an average speed of 151.6mph (244km/h).

The car was designed and built by a team of British motorsport engineers in Norfolk, and driven by estate agent Nick Ponting, 21, from Gloucestershire.

The old record was 137mph (220km/h).

The vehicle clocked 151.607mph during two runs along the mile-long course.
