Man Jailed For ‘Brutal’ Murder Of Pensioner

A man has been jailed for life for the "brutal" murder of an 80-year-old Perthshire woman in her own home.

Jenny Methven died after being beaten on her head and body with a blunt object at her Forteviot cottage on 20 February this year.

William Kean, 46, from Blairgowrie in Perthshire, was convicted after a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

Judge Lord Glennie said Kean would have to serve at least 22 years before he can apply for parole.

New Olympic Sports TV Channel Launched

A new sports TV channel is to launch in the wake of the London 2012 Olympics, providing coverage of sports featured at the Games including judo, gymnastics and fencing.

London Legacy will launch as a 24-hour-a-day channel in November, showing 24 Olympic sports, including athletics, cycling and wrestling.

The channel will initially only be available to BSkyB's satellite TV customers, but is seeking wider distribution.

Safari Park Snake Handler Bitten By Cobra

A snake handler at West Midlands Safari Park had to be airlifted to hospital after being bitten by a venomous snake.

Keeper Mark O'Shea is said to be in a "stable condition" after the bite by a king cobra on Sunday afternoon.

Director Bob Lawrence said Mr O'Shea, who has presented TV shows and written books on reptiles, was bitten as he tried to feed the snake.

Met Officer Dies In Diving Accident
A Metropolitan Police officer has died while diving in the English Channel, according to emergency services. The 57-year-old officer was one of two men who were airlifted to Worthing hospital after getting into difficulties while on a diving expedition off the Sussex coast on Saturday afternoon.

Lancashire Police Appeal To The Public Over Missing Snake
Lancashire Police are appealing to the public to be on the look-out for a missing snake. The snake, believed to be a Boa Constrictor, was reported missing on Tuesday night from an address in Bearncroft.

Viacom To Buy Channel 5
Viacom is to buy Channel 5, it has been confirmed. The US media group is understood to have acquired the UK channel for £450m from the Northern & Shell group. In a statement, Viacom said the move would "accelerate" its strategy within the UK, and called Channel 5 as "one of British television's biggest brands".

Boa Constrictor On The Loose In Kent
Kent residents are being told to be extra vigilant following the escape of a pet boa constrictor. The 6ft snake, which is brown with distinctive black markings was reported missing on Monday afternoon after escaping from its home in St Mary's Island, Chatham on Sunday night.
