Mixed Fortunes For UK Magazines

Private Eye was again the best-performing news magazine in the first half of 2012, with sales up by nearly 10% over last year as the title benefited from magazine's 50th anniversary and the fallout from the News of the World phone-hacking scandal.

The satirical current affairs fortnightly sold 226,046 on average, ahead 9.6% on the year, according to the latest official figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Meanwhile, “lads mag” Nuts fell under 100,000 sales a week in the first half of 2012.

The IPC Media title shed 21% of its circulation compared to the previous six months, to 90,134. This was a 20.9% year-on-year decline.

Body Found Of Missing Cheshire Runner

The body of a runner from Cheshire who went missing during an off-road race in southern Greece in April has been found on a mountainside.

The Greek volunteer rescue organisation GAIA Alert confirmed John Lawton's body had been identified.

It said the coroner had been notified and his body had been moved to Kalamata Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Peter Rowley, volunteer for GAIA Alert, which led the search, said: "He was found quite a distance away from checkpoint four on the race route, around four hours steady climb up a gorge."

HMRC Sieze 25,000 Bottles Of Red Wine

More than 25,000 bottles of red wine have been seized by customs in Newport in a crackdown on alcohol smuggling.

The haul at a container storage site in the docks area also included 67,000 cigarettes and 92kg of tobacco.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said the haul, including 25,175 bottles of Corte Dorata, evaded duty worth around £90,000.

A van, tractor unit and trailer were also seized in the raid but no-one has been arrested.

UK Troops Get Boost To Personal Protection
British troops fighting in the frontline are to receive new body armour and helmets this autumn, it has been announced. Over 10,000 sets of the enhanced Mark 7 helmet and the Osprey Assault body armour have been ordered from companies across the UK, under initial contracts worth around £16 million.

Stepbrother Of Becky Watts Charged With Murder
The stepbrother of 16-year-old Becky Watts has been charged with murder. Nathan Matthews, 28, has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Bristol Crown Court on 2 April. His girlfriend, Shauna Hoare, 21, was also remanded in custody.

Golf Course Victim Identified
A badly burned body found on the 11th tee of a world famous golf course has been identified by police. The discovery was made by greenkeepers at Carnoustie, Angus, on Wednesday. Robert Higgins, 51, of Main Street, Barry, has been named as the victim. The area was sealed off as while officers worked at the scene. The course has re-opened today.

Third Body Found In Arson Attack Mansion
A third body has been found in the burnt-out mansion of a millionaire businessman. Christopher Foster, 50, his wife Jill, 49, and their 15-year-old daughter Kirstie had not been seen since the arson attack last Tuesday at Osbaston House, a large country estate in Shropshire. West Mercia Police are treating the case as a murder inquiry.

Police Identify Body Found In Forth
Police have confirmed that the body found in the Firth of Forth on Sunday is that of missing man Charles McLachlan. Mr McLachlan, 39, went missing from his home in West Lothian on June 10.
