Unemployment Falls To 2.56m

The unemployment rate has fallen by 0.2%, some 46,000 people, in the three months to June, new figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) have shown.

The unemployment rate dropped to 8.0%, down from 8.2% in the previous quarter, with the total now standing at 2.56 million.

The number of people claiming JSA also fell by 5,900 to 1.50 million in July, the ONS figures show.

People working part-time because they could not find full-time reached an all time, up 16,000 in the three months to June. Now totalling 1.42 million, the highest figure since records began in 1992.

However, the ONS have admitted the figures may be distorted due to the Olympics and the gains may be shortlived.

Official figures show big rise in employment rate
Employment levels are up, and the number of people claiming out-of-work benefits is down, according to official figures out today. The number of people in work in the UK was 28.3 million in the three months to July 2004, up 179,000 in a year. Official unemployment figures show a fall of 87,000 to 1.41 million over the same period.

ONS Figures Show Further Fall In UK Unemployment
New figures from the Office for National Statistics have shown that the UK's unemployment rate has fallen to 2.32 million, a decrease of 167,000 in the three months to November. The unemployment rate currently stands at 7.1%. The number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance also dropped to 1.

Almost 200,000 More People Now In Work
The latest employment figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the number of people in work rose by 193,000 to 30.15 million in the three months to December. The number of people unemployed fell to 2.34 million, a drop of 125,000, for the same period. The unemployment rate now stands at 7.2% with the employment rate at 72.

ONS Figures Show UK Unemployment Now At 2.56m
New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that unemployment reached 2.56 million in February, rising some 70,000 since December. The overall unemployment rate for the quarter was 7.9%. The figures also show that the number of Jobseeker’s Allowance claimants fell to 1.53 million, dropping by 7,000 last month.

Government figures reveal drop in poverty figures
Fewer pensioners and children are living in poverty, new government figures have revealed. A report by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) showed that absolute pensioner poverty has dropped from 2.8 million in 1997 to 900,000 today, a drop of two-thirds.
