Lorry Driver Jailed For Driving Wrong Way On M6

A lorry driver has been jailed for eight months and disqualified for three years after driving the wrong way down the M6 for three miles.

Pal Korbely, 50, of Hungary, admitted dangerous driving and driving a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol at Birmingham Crown Court.

Three lorry drivers formed a blockade to stop Korbely near to junction 10 of the M6, at Walsall, late on 7 July.

Judge Paul Farrer QC said the drivers would each receive a £250 reward.

He said: "They are to be commended for their fast thinking and brave actions which may have saved lives."

The court heard Korbely had drank 51% proof home-made plum brandy before driving his lorry.

Two-Year-Old Dies In Holiday Accident

A two-year-old girl has died after falling into a swimming pool while on a family holiday in Spain.

Isabella May Crump, from Ludlow, died after the incident at her great grandparents' villa in the Costa Blanca region on Wednesday, police said.

A member of the family said they had attempted to revive Isabella after finding her in the pool and were all "devastated" by the death.

The Foreign Office said it had offered consular assistance.

Review Called For ‘Scandalising The Court’ Charge

The ancient offence of scandalising the court is to be reviewed to see if it is still necessary.

The offence is a form of contempt of court, but has not been successfully prosecuted since 1931.

It is committed by publishing anything that ridicules the judiciary to the extent that it is likely to bring the administration of justice into disrepute.

The Law Commission is consulting on the law in England and Wales.

Woman Denies Causing The Death Of Her Sister
A woman from Bridlington has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of her sister in a car collision. Rosie-Ann Stone, 20, to a charge of causing the death of Jennie Stone by careless driving at Hull Crown Court today. Stone was prosecuted after her sister's car struck a tree on the A165. She died of fatal head injuries.

West Brom striker jailed over fatal car smash
West Bromwich Albion striker Lee Hughes has been sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving at Coventry Crown Court today. Hughes was found guilty of causing the death of Douglas Graham, a 56-year-old father of four in Meriden, West Midlands, on November 23 last year.

Lack of driver education to blame for fatal accidents
A lack of driver education is to blame for fatal accidents on motorways according to a report by an insurance company. Direct Line, the UK's largest car insurer, is calling for changes to the driving test to include education on motorway driving due to a rise in the number of accidents involving heavy goods vehicles (HGV).

A Manchester police man has been praised for tackling an armed assailant who threatened to shoot his colleague. The officer responded to a call for assistance after a fellow police man, who had been called to a disturbance at a pub on Lytham Road in Flixton, was threatened with a gun yesterday afternoon.

Guman Stopped Near Blair's Home
An Albanian man has been accused of possessing a loaded weapon outside the London home of former prime minister Tony Blair. Kutjim Nurka, 56, was stopped in his car by officers patrolling Connaught Street on Monday night.
