Plain Cigarette Package Consultation Ends
The UK-wide consultation on government plans to introduce mandatory plain packaging for tobacco will close later today (Friday).
The consultation was extended by a month to allow more people to respond after strong public interest in the issue.
The proposal could mean information about individual brands being removed from cigarette packets, with just the name and warnings visible.
Campaigners see plain packaging as the next step in discouraging young people from taking up smoking.
When he launched the consultation four months ago, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said he wanted tobacco companies to have "no business" in the UK.
Deborah Arnott, chief executive of campaign group Ash, said: "Plain, standardised packaging of its lethal products frightens Big Tobacco silly because it threatens its profits.
"That's why the industry has devoted millions of pounds to put pressure on politicians and prevent the government from going ahead with this measure."
But Simon Clark, director of Forest, a pro-smoking lobby group, said: "There is no evidence that standardised packaging will have any health benefits.
"Advocates base their arguments not on facts but on speculation."

RCP Calls For Tougher Government Action On Smoking
On the 50th anniversary of a groundbreaking report by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) on the danger of smoking, fresh calls have been made for tougher action by government. The RCP published a celebrated report in 1962 which was hoped would lead to a decline in smoking by having doctors explaining the dangers directly to the public.

River search continues
The search for the 15 year-old boy swept into a flooded river is continuing today. Divers and a boat have been brought in a bid to locate the boy who fell into the River Isis in Oxford. Two friends of the boy raised the alarm, telling a passer-by that their friend had fallen into the river and drowned.

Suspect package found at Tesco store
A controlled explosion has been carried out on a suspect package found in a Tesco store in Bristol. Police were called to the store in the Eastville area of the city around 7:45am on Monday morning after the package was discovered. Bomb disposal experts were called and the package was blown up around 11:15am.
