Residents Take Olympic Missile Challenge To High Court
Council tenants have begun a High Court bid to block proposals to place surface-to-air missiles on the roof of their tower block during the Olympics.
Residents of Fred Wigg Tower in Leytonstone, east London, are applying for permission for a judicial review, saying that they were not consulted fairly and properly over the plans.
The move comes after the Ministry of Defence announced plans earlier this year to deploy either Rapier or high-velocity missiles at six sites as part of security measures for the London Games.
The residents' barrister, Marc Willers, said their block could become the "focus of a terrorist attack" to make an "evil statement".
The residents also want an injunction preventing the siting of the missiles until their legal challenge is heard.
At the High Court in London, the defence secretary is expected to be accused by the local residents' association of breaching Article 8 and Article 1 of Protocol 1 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
These protect an individual's right to a private life and peaceful enjoyment of their home.
The judge hearing the application said the case was "urgent" and hopes to give judgment within a day or two.

Tobin Murder Trial Halted Due To Illness
The trial of the man accused of murdering an 18-year-old teenage girl has been halted after a judge found he was not fit to stand trial. The judge, sitting at Chelmsford Crown Court discharged the jury, saying that Peter Tobin, who is 62, was ill and needed surgery.

Top judge cleared of flashing charge
One of Britain's most senior judges has been found not guilty of exposing himself to a woman twice on packed commuter trains. Sir Stephen Richards, a 56-year-old Court of Appeal judge, from south-west London, was alleged to have flashed at the same woman on two trains in the area on October 16 and 24 last year.

Inquest into judge fire death announced
The High Court has ordered a fresh inquest into the death of a judge who died in a fire in his garden shed. Andrew Chubb, 58, died in the fire at his home near Chard, Somerset, in July 2001. The fire is understood to have occurred less than an hour after the judge had asked his wife of 34 years, Jennifer for a divorce.
