Seven Legionnaire's Cases Now Confirmed
The number of confirmed cases of Legionnaire's disease in Edinburgh has risen to seven.
NHS Lothian said that six of the seven men affected by the outbreak are still in intensive care units in a critical condition.
They are aged between 39 and 65.
One man has been discharged from hospital.
There are 13 suspected cases of the disease, which is spread by contaminated water.
Industrial water coolers in the south west of Edinburgh may be to blame, but the source of the outbreak is still being investigated.
All confirmed cases so far have been confined to Dalry, Gorgie and Saughton.
Sixteen cooling towers in the area have been treated by environmental health staff.
Older people, particularly men or smokers or those with other health conditions, are at elevated risk of contracting Legionnaire's disease, which has symptoms including mild headaches, muscle pain, fever and a persistent cough.
Sometimes the potentially-fatal illness can also cause vomiting and diarrhoea.
The first case in this outbreak was identified on Thursday 28 May.
Legionnaire's disease cannot be spread from person to person, but only by breathing in droplets of contaminated water.
