Forth Bridge Bid For World Heritage Site
Scotland’s world-renowned engineering marvel the Forth Railway Bridge could become a World Heritage Site.
It has been put forward to UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) and the decision will be taken in 2015.The Victorian bridge, which links Edinburgh with Fife, is already a listed structure but still carries more than 200 trains a day. Network Rail owns and maintains the 1.5 mile-long bridge, Britain’s first major steel construction.
David Simpson of Network Rail Scotland said the nomination was a "tribute" to the thousands of men who had restored and maintained the bridge since it was first used in 1890.
Oil Refinery Jobs At Risk
An oil refinery which went bust is set to close after administrators failed to find a buyer. Around 850 jobs are at risk at the Coryton plant in Essex.
The plant supplies 20% of fuel in London and the South East. Swiss owner Petroplus failed to raise the £625 million to fund the refinery.
All Victims Of Crime To Be Offered Home Visits
As part of the Commissioner's vision of total care for victims of crime, the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) will now - regardless of the offence - offer all victims a home visit by a police officer.
In the new scheme, known as Operation Promote, victims of offences such as criminal damage, theft of pedal cycles and harassment will have the choice of either reporting the incident over the phone, by attending a police station, or making an appointment with an officer to see them at a convenient time and place.
