NUT And NASUWT Reach Historic Agreement

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) and NASUWT have reached an historic agreement to act together in defence of teachers and education.

The NUT and NASUWT will not allow its pensions, professional practice, working conditions and workload to worsen.

In a joint statement the NUT and NASUWT said: "We will not let our pay and jobs be cut. Together we represent 85% of the teaching profession in England and Wales. We are a formidable force.

"We have written to the Secretary of State calling for urgent discussions about the concerns of the teaching profession. We want to talk and we are willing to meet at any time. However, should the Government refuse to listen, then it is our intention to ask for your support for joint industrial action by the NASUWT and NUT.

"We believe that we have to make a stand together and that together we can make a real difference.

"As part of this process the NUT will be balloting eligible members later this term for both strike action and action short of strike in the autumn term. A high turnout and YES vote will help strengthen our negotiating position. Please vote YES to both questions as soon as you get your ballot paper.

"Working with colleagues in the NASUWT, we will be better able to protect teachers and defend education."
