Brooks Confirms PM's Message Of Support
Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks has confirmed to the Leveson Inquiry she received a message of support from prime minister David Cameron after she quit her job in July 2011.
Mrs Brooks is the sole witness at the Royal Courts of Justice today and has described to the inquiry her relationship with Conservative and Labour politicians during her time as editor of the Sun, News of the World and chief executive of News International.
Asked by counsel Robert Jay whether she had received a message from the prime minister to ‘keep your head up’ in July 2011, Mrs Brooks said she had received 'something along those lines’. She added he had also expressed regret that he could not be more loyal in public.
Tax Refunds Come Early This Year
Around three million taxpayers will start to receive tax refunds from next week, two months earlier than last year, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) confirmed today. This is because the annual reconciliation of Pay As You Earn (PAYE) for the tax year 2011/12 is starting earlier than ever before.
Up to 3.5 million taxpayers who have overpaid tax will receive an average repayment of £379, and up to 1.6 million will need to make up an average £537 shortfall in their tax, as they have underpaid during the year. In most cases this will be collected through their tax code.
These reconciliations are a normal part of PAYE processing.
Apprentices To Receive Lifesaving Advice
Young construction apprentices in Aberdeen are to receive lifesaving advice at a free event raising awareness of death, injury and ill health in the workplace.
Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive and leading members of the construction industry will offer practical tips and guidance on how to prevent incidents while carrying out key activities on site.
The event, on Wednesday, 16 May at Gordon Barracks, Bridge of Don, is being run in conjunction with the Construction Safety Forum – a local self help forum which meets monthly to allow members to share experiences and receive simple, practical advice and documentation designed for small and medium-sized construction companies in the North East.
The construction industry remains one of the most dangerous sectors to work in, with 960 injuries to workers in Scotland in 2010/11 – including one fatality.
The aim of the event is not only to raise awareness of the key health and safety issues facing the construction industry but to also give apprentices practical advice on how to avoid risks on all sites.
