Severe Weather Leaves Homes Without Power
Approximately 12,000 properties are without power after gales and ice brought down power lines in Northumberland.
Northern Powergrid have restored supplies to a further 13,000 properties affected by severe weather conditions and they are now dealing with 120 known incidents.
A spokesman said: "The engineers are continuing to work in difficult conditions to restore power to those customers affected as quickly as possible. Efforts have been hampered by travel and access difficulties, including significant snow drifts and road closures. Our major incident response will continue with teams in the field, at our local coordination centres, and in our Network Control and Contact Centre.
"A helicopter has been deployed to assist in identifying the damage, flying along the power lines and enabling the targeting of engineering resource to specific areas.
"Our customer service support vehicles and Red Cross customer care assistance have been deployed to the worst affected areas to offer free hot drinks and snacks and to provide additional local support and information. All known vulnerable customers without power are being kept personally updated."
The company apologised to those customers still experiencing power supply problems and urge them to contact the 24 hour power cut helpline with any concerns on 0800 66 88 77 (Northeast customers) or 0800 375 675 (Yorkshire customers).

Children who live near power lines are more likely to develop leukaemia, a team of scientists has claimed. Researchers from Oxford University found that children who lived within 200 metres of high voltage power lines had a 70% higher chance of developing leukaemia than those children who lived more than 600 metres away from the power cables.
