Drugs Discovered In Waffle Lorry

A man from the Netherlands has been charged with trying to smuggle heroin and cocaine, worth up to £3million, into the UK through the port of Harwich.

Marcus Luijten, aged 46, from Oosterhout in the Netherlands, was arrested on Friday 30 March after Border Force officers discovered approximately 20kg of cocaine and 46kg of heroin concealed within packets of waffles carried on a lorry.

The lorry had arrived on a ferry from the Hook of Holland.

The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) is now leading the investigation into the drugs detection.

Luitjen was charged with attempting to import a Class A substance and appeared before Colchester Magistrates on Monday 2 April where he was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 11 April.

Peter Avery from border force, said: "This detection shows that our officers are on constant alert, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to keep class A drugs and other banned substances out of the UK.

"We are determined to prevent the terrible trade in drugs which can have such a destructive impact on the lives of so many."
