North Sea Oil Rigs Evacuated After Gas Leak
Workers on two offshore oil rigs have been evacuated after a gas leak on a third, nearby, rig.
Shell has removed workers from two of its rigs off the coast of Aberdeen after a Total platform was evacuated following a leak.
After a sheen on the water was confirmed, owners of the platform Total E&P UK (TEP UK), said they were taking “all possible measures” to try to identify the cause of the leak.
Oil Spill Response (OSRL) on Monday carried out two aerial surveillance flights to assess the situation and two further flights were planned for Tuesday.
Shell, whose Shearwater and Noble Hans Deul platforms are around 4miles from the Elgin platform, said it had taken the decision to remove its staff as a precautionary measure and that the wells had been left in a “safe state”.
52 workers have been removed from Shearwater, leaving 38 on board, while 33 are being taken off the Hans Deul, leaving 79.
A Shell spokesman said: "While the move is purely precautionary and primarily driven by the prevailing weather conditions, and both facilities remain operational, it has been decided to reduce numbers to a more manageable level until the full situation surrounding the Elgin leak has been established."
TEP UK said it had met the secretary of state's representative, the Health and Safety Executive, the Department of Energy and Climate change, Marine Scotland and the coastguard.
In a statement, the company said: "Total E&P UK confirms that the gas leak at the Elgin Well Head Platform remains ongoing, although the situation is currently stable.
"We continue to take all possible measures to try to identify the source and cause of the leak and to bring it under control."

27 Oil Fields Shut Down Following Leak
A leak on the Cormorant Alpha platform has lead to a pipeline system servicing up to 27 oil fields being shut down. The fields affected, and another eight associated platforms, produce about 10% of the UK's oil output. It follows the discovery on Monday of a leak inside a leg of the Cormorant Alpha platform.

Source Of North Sea Gas Leak Has Been Found
Total, owners of the evacuated Elgin oil platform, have said they think theu have found the source of the gas leak. The French fuel group said they have traced the leak to a gas pocket in a rock formation 4km (2.5 miles) below the seabed but 1km above the gas reservoir being tapped.

Over 8,000 Homes Without Water After Mains Burst In Bristol
Up to 8,000 homes have been left without water after a mains water pipe burst near Bristol. It is understood that a 30 inch water main ruptured in Kingswood on Thursday afternoon, leaving thousands of residents without water and forcing the closure of 18 schools in the area. Bristol Water are supplying water to residents via tankers.

Second Suspected Chemical Leak At Colchester Council Building
A council building has been evacuated for the second time in 10 days following a suspected chemical leak. Essex fire crews were called back to the county council's Essex House building in The Crescent, Colchester, after around 12 people were taken ill. Crews are giving first aid to those affected.
