Daily Mail Wins Newspaper Of The Year

The Daily mail has been named newspaper of the year.

This years Press Awards commended British print journalism during a event which saw the Mail win a total of seven awards including campaign of the year for its coverage of the two men convicted of Stephen Lawrence's murder.

They also took home an award for feature writer and news team of the year and website of the year for the Mail Online.

Other awards included the Guardian taking the scoop of the year gong for breaking the phone hacking scandal.

Craig Brown won a trio of awards, for most popular columnist, the best of humorous writing and best critic for the Mail on Sunday.

Melanie Reid, who has been documenting her battle to walk again since she fell of a horse, was named best broadsheet columnist for The Times.

The newspaper also scooped sports journalist of the year, best cartoonist and business and finance team of the year.

There were two prizes for The Sunday Times newspaper and The Times Magazine was named supplement of the year.

The Daily Telegraph picked up four prizes, including sports team of the year and front page of the year for their London riots coverage in August.

Hairspray Scoops Four Olivier Awards
West End musical 'Hairspray' has won four awards at this year's Laurence Olivier Awards. The stage musical was named best new musical, while newcomer Leanne Jones won the award for best actress in a musical for her role as Tracy Turnblad.

Olympic Fan Gets Rings Piercings
An Olympics fan has had five piercings in her upper thigh so she can wear the sporting event's iconic five rings. Laura Thornton, 27, made the one-inch wide tribute to the Games to "show support" for Team GB. She told the Daily Mail newspaper the procedure took just 30 minutes to complete.

Met Police Seize Scam Mail Aimed At UK Victims
In the first operation of its kind, officers from the Metropolitan Police Service's Economic and Specialist Crime Unit (Operation Sterling) took possession of a bulk delivery of scam mail intended for vulnerable victims across the UK and searched and closed five virtual offices used by the scammers.

Winehouse Wins Five Grammys
Troubled singer Amy Winehouse has won five awards at the Grammys, despite being unable to attend the event. Amy picked up awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year for her hit single 'Rehab', as well as awards for Best Pop Vocal for her album 'Back To Black', Best Female Pop Vocal and Best New Artist.

Irish Eyes Smile At Oscars
Irish luck prevailed at the 80th Academy Awards with Wicklow-based Daniel Day Lewis scooping the best actor award and Frames lead singer Glen Hansard sharing the best original song. Dark comedy ‘No Country For Old Men’ was a big winner with director brothers Joel and Ethan Coen picking up best picture, director and adapted screenplay.
