PM To Tackle Alcohol Abuse
The Prime Minister is meet doctors, nurses, paramedics and local police on Wednesday to highlight the cost of alcohol to the NHS. According to the Government, figures released on Wednesday show an "ever-growing bill to the NHS", which it claims stands at £2.7bn a year, including £1bn on accident and emergency services. The Governemnt said the £2.7bn equates to £90 for every taxpayer and was part of a wider cost to society from alcohol of between £17 billion and £22 billion per annum. Ahead of his visit to a North England hospital this week, the Prime Minister said: “Every night, in town centres, hospitals and police stations across the country, people have to cope with the consequences of alcohol abuse. And the problem is getting worse. Over the last decade we’ve seen a frightening growth in the number of people – many under-age – who think it’s acceptable for people to get drunk in public in ways that wreck lives, spread fear and increase crime.
Man Carrying Axe In Brixton Jailed
A man seen carrying an axe while involved in burglary and criminal damage during last year's summer disorder in Brixton Town Centre has been jailed for over five years. Karl Smith, 26, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to a total of five years and three months imprisonment at Inner London Crown Court on Tuesday, 14 February after admitting burglary, violent disorder and criminal damage.
Appeal Renewed Over Hit And Run
Detectives are renewing appeals for information a week after a fatal hit-and-run collision involving a stolen car. A manslaughter investigation was launched following the incident on Tuesday 7 February in which 70-year-old Roberto Da Silva, a retired mechanical engineer from Hayes, was killed. Detective Chief Inspector Steve Lawrence from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command said: "We are keen to speak to anyone in the area who either saw the Volkswagen Golf being driven prior the collision, saw the people responsible running away afterwards or may know who is responsible. Please come forward. Detectives and local Safer Neighbourhoods officers will be at various locations in the area on Wednesday, handing out leaflets and seeking information from the public. "I would urge anyone with information to please contact the Incident Room at Belgravia on 020 7321 7228, or if you wish to remain anonymous please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111," he added.

An estimated one in eleven children in the UK are living with parents who misuse alcohol, according to a report. Social care charity Turning Point said that children whose parents had alcohol problems often suffered behavioural, emotional and school-related problems.

Charity Calls For Ban On Alcohol Advertising
Alcohol companies should be banned from advertising at sporting and music events, the charity Alcohol Concern has said. The ban would limit the exposure of young people to such advertising, as the charity claims that young people more readily recognise alcohol brands over ice cream and cake products.
