Man Sentenced After Girl Mauled By Dog
A man whose dog bit off part of a six-year-old girl's ear in London has been given a suspended 12-week jail term. Gary Hindley, 56, of Chingford, admitted allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control in a north-east London park. Hindley pleaded guilty to a breach of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 at Thames Magistrates Court. The victim's father said the dog attacked several times, circling them in what he likened to a "shark attack". The girl also sustained injuries to her neck and shoulder.
Construction Market Falters
The UK construction industry continued to stall during the final three months of 2011, as doubts were cast over the government's ability to boost private funding and to deliver on proposed infrastructure projects, according to the latest RICS Construction Market Survey. Only 14% of surveyors stated they felt the government would be successful in their Autumn Statement pledge and generate sufficient institutional funding for planned infrastructure projects. There was also a healthy degree of scepticism about the Get Britain Building Fund, with only a quarter of surveyors across the UK believing that it would have a positive impact on the sector.
Pair Saved From Steep Hill Fall
A father and daughter were rescued from their van which was "dangerously" close to slipping off an icy road into a steep valley in Shropshire. The pair ignored a road closure sign on Burway Road over beauty spot Long Mynd on Saturday, police said. They slipped to edge of the road and the man had to keep the handbrake and footbrake on while they called police. A police 4x4 vehicle then parked behind the van before fire crews moved it. The man was reported for ignoring the sign.
