Girls Tells Of Slavery And Abuse
A deaf and mute girl, who was allegedly kept in a basement and treated as a slave, has told a court of her suffering today.
The girl who cannot be named for legal reasons alleges that she was forced to work as domestic help, was raped, beaten and suffered years of cruelty at the hands of a now elderly couple.
Ilyas Ashar, 83, and his wife, Tallat Ashar, 66, have denied charges at Minshull Street Crown Court. Among the charges they face are false imprisonment and human trafficking.
The jury were told that the alleged incidents happened after the orphaned youngster was trafficked to the UK from Pakistan in 2000.
The girl, now aged between 19 and 21, supposedly worked as a domestic help - though aged only 10 at the time.
The orphaned youngster was slapped, beaten, sexually abused and hit with a rolling pin while forced to work for no money during the day. At night the victim was made to sleep on the concrete floor of a cellar, the court heard.
