Cumbrian Drivers Urged To Stay Off Roads

Drivers in Cumbria are being urged not to take to the roads unless absolutely necessary after a series of accidents.

Emergency services have dealt with nearly 100 crashes in the area caused by ice.

The A66 trans-Pennine route was closed for several hours after a number of lorries jackknifed near Stainmore. The M6 also saw a number of crashes.

The A66 was also the scene of a multi-vehicle accident near Penrith. There were no serious injuries reported.

It is understood that the majority of the 97 incidents occurred between 5am and 11am today.

A spokesman for the emergency services in the area said: "We have already experienced a higher number of road traffic collisions than normal in Cumbria and we are urging the public to take extra care whilst out on the roads."

Rise in drink-related deaths

Appeal For Witnesses To Serious Road Accident
North Wales Police have appealed for witnesses to a serious road accident on Sunday. A woman has been left with "significant injuries" after two vehicles crashed on the B4421 between Newborough and Llangaffo at about 20:00 on Sunday. Fall in number of children killed on Britain's roads
The number of children killed or seriously injured on British roads has fallen by a third in just three years, according to a government report published today. The report also found that the number of people killed or seriously injured on the roads has fallen by 17%.
