Fire Damages TV Chef’s Property

A fire has seriously damaged a property belonging to a celebrity TV chef. Training kitchens at Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s River Cottage headquarters in Devon have been destroyed by the blaze, which broke out just after 10pm last night. It is understood that the fire took several hours to get under control and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said fire-fighters had also had to isolate two large tanks of liquid propane gas at the Axminster property. A statement said: "The River Cottage team are shocked and upset but are dealing with the damage today.”

OAP Accused of Wife’s Murder

A 75-year-old man has appeared in court charged with his wife's murder. The body of Josephine Gilliard, 74, was found at about 10am on Sunday last at a house on Links Road, Blackpool. Her husband Frederick Gilliard was remanded to appear at Preston Crown Court on 10 February. A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as multiple stab wounds and a blow to the head with a heavy object.

British Gas Reassures Customers Over Rise In Gas Prices

British Gas, Britain's largest energy supplier, has reassured its customers following rises in prices in the wholesale gas market. This week, prices in the day-ahead market have reached their highest point since 2006, largely driven by the current cold snap affecting Europe. However, British Gas, has reassured its customers that this will not affect their gas prices this winter. British Gas bought the bulk of gas its customers would need this winter before the dramatic rises in the wholesale market.

British Gas Invests For Vulnerable Customers
British Gas have announced that it is making a new investment of £37 million in support for its vulnerable customers. Each customer on British Gas' Essentials social tariff will receive £50 as a credit on their winter bill. Prepayment customers will receive the credit direct to their meter.

Centrica Posts £1 Million In Profits - To Consumers Anger
British Gas owner Centrica has posted half-year profits of almost £1 billion - much to the anger of consumer groups. Centrica maintain that it has been "absolutely necessary" to raise household gas prices as profits were down 20% in the first six months of this year to £992 million - down from £1.23 billion in 2007.

Gas prices could rise again
British Gas has warned customers that gas prices could be increased again. Centrica, which owns British Gas, said that the price rises were being introduced because of expectations of an increase in wholesale prices. The price rises would follow a 12.4% increase in September last year and a further rise of 5.9% in January.

British Gas Cuts Electricity Prices By 10%
British Gas, the biggest supplier of electricity to homes in Britain, has cut an average 10% off its standard electricity prices. The price cut for 4.5 million customers takes effect immediately. British Gas's electricity rates are now as much as £111 lower than the local supplier.

British Gas To Reduce Prices By 10%
British Gas has announced it will reduce its gas prices by 10%, from February 19. The energy provider's reductions will apply to all customers on British gas standard tariff. This will benefit more than 7.5 million homes - 75% of it's client base.
