£4.8M Dale Farm Eviction Bill 'Under Budget'

The council responsible behind the mass eviction of a travelling community commune from its lands has said they have a "degree of satisfaction" that the £4.8 million price tag was "under budget".

Basildon Council, who controversially forced a clearance of the Dale Farm travellers' site in Essex said the total cost to the council has been calculated at approximately £4.8 million, which included £1.6 million that the council spent between September and October on high court hearings.

The council said the figure compared to a total council budget of £6.5 million for the operation.

The police costs were calculated at £2.36 million compared to a budget of £10 million in the event of "a worst case scenario", which the council did not elaborate on.

Leader of the Council Tony Ball said: "It gives me some degree of satisfaction that the operation was carried out under budget and this is thanks to the hard work and professionalism of council staff, our contractors and our partners in the fire, health and police services.

"I was however and remain annoyed that £1.6 million was added to our final bill by the delay and legal costs incurred between September and October when the travellers launched their last minute legal challenge against the Council's right to clear Dale Farm."

However, on Friday morning the BBC has reported a statement from local resident Len Gridley, whose land backs on to the Dale Farm site. He told reporters: "It's money not well spent. It's a waste of money because the travellers have only moved 500 yards down the road."
