Extra Cash Announced For Dentists
The Health Secretary has announced extra cash for dentistry in an attempt to increase the number of people able to access an NHS dentist.
According to the Department of Health, 820,000 more people have already been given access to an NHS dentist since May 2010.
The plans announced on Wednesday will see an extra £28 million of funding to bring the number of extra people now able to access an NHS dentist to one million.
The funding will be given to PCTs, who have bid for the cash to spend on expanding local services, including things like increasing the number of appointments with NHS dentists and providing care in people’s homes for people who can’t travel to see an NHS dentist.
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: “Too many people still have problems getting to see an NHS dentist. Giving people back their NHS dentist is a key priority of mine so I am delighted that we have been able to find more money for dentistry because of our successful programme of efficiency savings in the NHS.
"This is a great example of how the money we are saving through better management of money, cutting bureaucracy and rooting out waste in the NHS is being reinvested in frontline services for patients.”
The extra funding is part of the Government’s drive to improve oral health and increase access to NHS dentists. A key part of this is the Government’s commitment to replace the current dentist contract with one that supports dentists to improve oral health and increase access to services.

Consumer magazine Which? has said that people could be paying too much for dental treatment. The magazine claims that dentists are not being clear about pricing, with a survey of 1,000 people in England finding that one in five were overcharged for treatment. The magazine surveyed people who had been to see their dentist in the last six months.

The Government has pledged to invest an extra £368m in NHS Dentistry in England in an attempt to improve public access to dental care. The move, hailed as the biggest overhaul of the NHS Dentistry system since 1948, could see prices double in an attempt to lure more dentists back to the NHS sector.

Dentists Misleading NHS Patients, Report Finds
Dentists are charging potential NHS patients too much, research has found. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) found that about 500,000 patients a year could be getting the wrong information from their dentist about whether they qualify for NHS treatment. Patients may then end up paying more for private treatment.
