Wales May Opt Out Of 80mph Limit

The Welsh Government are being urged to opt out of UK proposals to raise the motorway speed limit from 70mph to 80mph.

A report from Sustainable Transport Cymru (STC) said increased speeds would lead to more accidents, higher casualty rates and more carbon emissions.

The UK government said it would consult on increasing the speed limit on motorways by 2013, arguing that increased car safety and technology meant that 70 mph was no longer a necessary limit to maintain reasonable safety.

However, the STC, a coalition of 25 organisations from the private, public and voluntary sectors, said it wanted to speak out against the plan before the consultation was officially launched.

The comments reflect those of the chief constable of South Wales Police who, in November, also spoke out against the plans to raise the top speed limit in England and Wales to 80mph.
