American Woman Jailed For Cocaine Smuggling

An American woman has been jailed for 7 years after trying to smuggle cocaine into the UK through Birmingham airport.

Elizabeth Salters, 35, was questioned by our officers at the airport after travelling from Newark in the USA on 21 September 2011.

During a search of her baggage a gift-wrapped parcel was found in a laptop bag which was found to contain cocaine. A further 2 packages, also containing cocaine, were found concealed within the lining of the laptop bag.

In total, 3kg of cocaine, with a potential street value of over £500,000, was seized.

On the 10 January 2012 Salters pleaded guilty to the importation of a controlled drug at Leamington justice centre and was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment.

Peter Avery, financial investigation assistant director, UK Border Agency said: "This sentence should serve as a warning to anyone tempted to try and smuggle drugs.

"Our officers are in the frontline of the fight to stop drugs, weapons, contraband and illegal immigrants entering the UK. Using the very latest technology, they are on constant alert to keep them out of the country.

"There is no doubt that this Class A drug would have ended up on the streets of the UK, causing damage to local communities and people, if our officers had not intercepted it."
