Falling Tree Hits Bus In Surrey

A bus driver has been freed after a large tree trapped him in his vehicle in Witley early on Tuesday morning.

The incident took place around 8.25am when a large oak tree, measuring 6ft across, fell on the single decker Stagecoach bus in Petworth Road near the junction with Church Lane.

Police said the driver, who was freed by fire crews, has suffered serious injuries and he is being taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting.

There was only one passenger on board the bus at the time of the incident who escaped uninjured.

The tree is also believed to have damaged a nearby building.

It is believed the incident is the result of the ongoing gusty conditions, which are causing traffic disruption throughout the UK.

The road remains closed in both directions while emergency services deal with the incident.
