PM Welcomes 500 Honda Jobs

The Prime Minister has welcomed the announcement of 500 new jobs from a Japanese car manufacturer.

Honda will start the mass production of the new Civic at its Swindon car plant, creating 500 new jobs to meet a forecasted production increase in 2012.

Mr Cameron said: “This is great news and a tremendous boost to the workforce, the car industry and UK manufacturing. Honda is contributing to a real renaissance in the UK automotive industry, we have a highly skilled workforce and we continue to be at the forefront of new technology and development.

Its success is of great importance to our economy and we are committed to do all that we can to see this vital industry grow and thrive.”

Honda Motor Europe President Manabu Nishimae speaking at the ceremony said Honda remained totally committed to building cars and engines in Europe with Swindon at the heart of Honda’s European manufacturing activities. He added that Honda in Europe had turned a corner with a significant production increase expected in 2012.

The news comes as automotive industry experts at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have named 2011 a step-change year for the industry.

The group said that based on "unprecedented" levels of international investment in the UK and long-term commitments to building new and existing vehicles and engines across the country, the prospects for automotive manufacturing are strong.

A statement by the SMMT on Tuesday said that, through 2011," said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive. "Vehicle manufacturers had committed in excess of £4 billion to projects in the UK, from the development of low carbon technologies to the introduction of all-new models.

“2011 has been a very significant year for the UK motor industry. We have seen a remarkable series of investment announcements by global vehicle manufacturers with a total of £4 billion of investment promised for the UK, securing new model programmes, production facilities and jobs.

"Despite the uncertainty within the Eurozone, these decisions demonstrate real confidence in the future of UK manufacturing and its role within a rebalanced economy.”
