Health Secretary Announces £2.5bn NHS Boost
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has announced the NHS will get a funding boost of over £2.5 billion to provide services for patients next year.
Speaking on Wednesday, Mr Lansley said £91.6 billion will go direct to Primary Care Trusts, representing a 2.8% increase in total allocations.
The minister said the investment represented a "real-terms increase" in health spending and showed the Government’s determination to ensure patients had access to "high Health Secretary Andrew Lansley, said: “I am committed to the NHS and to services for patients. We are continuing to meet our commitment to increase the NHS budget in real terms. This will mean a £2.5bn increase next year."
“The extra investment gives Primary Care Trusts a strong platform to sustain and improve NHS services for patients. But despite this extra spending, the NHS must still strive to get the best value out of every penny it spends to meet rising demand and continue to improve results for patients."
Outlining the plan, Mr Lansley said £87.5 billion was allocated to Primary Care Trusts, which included £300m for "re-ablement services" such as community care services.
Meanwhile, £4.1 billion will be invested in dental and eye care, pharmaceutical services and support for joint working between health and social care, the minister claimed.

'Review Reinforces Commitment', Health Secretary
In line with the government's commitment to protect health spending, overall NHS spending is set to increase by 0.4% in real terms over the course of the Spending Review period. This will include a 1.3% increase in the resource budget, and a 17% decrease in capital spending.
