Cameron's Demands A Risk To Market – Barroso
David Cameron's demands during the weekend's EU debate presented a "risk to the integrity of the internal market", the EC President has said.
In a speech on Tuesday, José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, said he had searched for "compromise" on the issues, but these had "proved impossible".
The Commission President said most member states had made it clear they did not want to circumvent the community method and the EU institutions.
The agreement reach will see harsher punishments on failing countries and a larger fund from the European Central Bank. The deal, which is believed to have been crucial for the future of the EU and the single currency will not replace current institutions and procedures but on the contrary build on them, according to President Barroso.
Meanwhile, senior Conservatives and Lib Dems have met for a "business-like" meeting of the coalition cabinet after recent tensions over David Cameron's decision to veto the crunch plan.
On Monday, Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg, deputy prime minister, chose not to attend Prime Minister David Cameron's statement to MPs on Monday about the EU summit.
Mr Clegg had spoken out against the decision saying it had left the UK "isolated" in Europe and was "bad for Britain".
But the PM's official spokesman said Tuesday's cabinet meeting's atmosphere was "the same as usual".
He said: "It was a good conversation... there are different views but a lot of common ground, particularly on the single market."
He also said "there is an understanding that both parties come from different positions on Europe".
