No Referendum Decision Until March

The Taoiseach has said it will be March before any decision on whether or not a referendum will be needed in relation to EU Treaty changes takes place.

Speaking in Westport, Co Mayo, Enda Kenny said if a referendum was necessary it would be held but a great deal of "technical work, of legal work and wording" had to be gone through.

Meanwhile, Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said a definitive legal opinion on whether a referendum will be required on the EU agreement will not be available for two months, when the text has been finalised.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs said if there is to be a referendum arising out of the European summit deal last week, it will be about a new inter-governmental agreement, not EU treaty change.

Responding to David Camerons decision to veto the plan, Mr Kenny said he would have preferred that all 27 EU member states continue to be involved in the discussions.

"Ireland is very interested in seeing that the Prime Minister retains a deep interest in expanding the single market."

However, Mr Kenny said he was not suggesting a situation where Ireland would set up back channel discussions between Britain and the other EU member states.
