World Aids Day Acknowledges 86,000 UK Sufferers
Today is World Aids Day and it is 30 years this month since the first diagnosis of the disease in the UK.
According to an article by The Telegraph some 86,500 people in the UK are currently living with HIV, part of a world-wide epidemic of which the World Health Authority (WHO) estimates more than 30 million adults and close to 3 million children are sufferers.
World Aids Day has since 1988 has been observed around the world to commemorate those who have died from the disease and also to raise awareness of the issue and generate funds for continued research into a possible cure and treatment.

Agency issues warning over UK's rising HIV population
The number of people who acquire their HIV infection in the UK is increasing, according to a report published by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) to mark World AIDS Day. In addition there has been almost a 20% increase in the number of people living with HIV in the UK, up from 41,700 in 2001 to 49,500 in 2002.

Rugby World Cup enlisted in UN's 'Tackle Hunger' campaign
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) today appointed former Rugby World Cup-winning captains Nick Farr-Jones of Australia and David Kirk of New Zealand as ambassadors for the 'Tackle Hunger' campaign launched earlier this year after UN agency teamed up with Rugby World Cup (RWC).

A special Armistice Day service at Westminster Abbey has been held to mark the deaths of the last three remaining First World War veterans in the UK, who all died in the past year. William Stone, 108, died in January, followed by Henry Allingham, 113 and Harry Patch, 111, in July.
