Shop Owner Fights Off Raiders With Broom
Detectives from the Met's Flying Squad have released CCTV footage of a man wanted in connection with a violent attempted robbery at a jeweller in Dagenham. The graphic footage shows the well-built man wielding a knife at a shop owner and grabbing a female saleswoman around the neck. The incident happened on Friday 21 October at 11.15am in Harrolds Discount Jewellers along Dagenham Heathway. The man is seen to loiter by the doorway before pulling out a knife from his jacket and lunging towards the female victim. He grabs her around the neck and holds the blade to her neck. The shop owner reacted quickly and forced the suspect to release the woman before wrestling with him and trying to grab the weapon. The owner eventually manages to grab a broom and forces the suspect from the property. The suspect is seen to flee across the road and into the shopping centre along Dagenham Heathway. He is described as being white, of stocky build with a shaved head. Detective Chief Inspector Ian Corner, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was a violent attack which left the shop workers extremely shaken. They acted with great courage to fight off the suspect and were lucky to have avoided being seriously injured. We need help from the public to trace this individual before he attempts to target someone else." Anyone who recognises the man or knows of his whereabouts should contact the Flying Squad in Barking on 020 8345 4226 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
