War Memorial Plaque Stolen

An appeal for information on the whereabouts of a war memorial plaque has been launched after it was stolen from Lewisham High Street last month.

A 42-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman have been charged with the theft and will appear at Greenwich Magistrates' Court on future dates but despite extensive enquiries to locate the memorial it has not been found.

The theft was reported to police on the 20 October of this year. It contained the names of those that died during World War one and was of "incalculable" historical and emotional value of the memorial to the friends and relatives of the fallen soldiers.

The police would like to appeal to anyone who has knowledge of its movements or current whereabouts to contact the Burglary Squad at Lewisham Police Station on 0208 284 8415.

Alternatively if they wish to provide information anonymously they can call crime stoppers on 0800 555 111.

The appeal comes as workplaces, offices, homes, shops and people on the streets fell into silence on Friday morning in remembrance of fallen British soldiers on Armistice Day.

At 11pm, the country marked the traditional silence at the precise moment the guns fell quiet on the western front at the end of World War I in November 1918.

The annual ceremony took place at the Cenotaph in London's Whitehall, while the Royal British Legion held a 'Silence in the Square' event in nearby Trafalgar Square.
