Two Arrested Over Hexham Murder
Police investigating the murder of an elderly woman in Hexham last week have arrested two people.
Judith Richardson, 77, was found dead at her home on Saint Wilfrid's Road in Hexham on Friday evening, after officers called there following the discovery of her handbag in Newcastle city centre.
A post-mortem revealed that Miss Richardson died as a result of head injuries.
DCI Paul Young, from Northumbria, said: "This has been a brutal attack on an elderly woman in a quiet community. Our thoughts are with Miss Richardson's family and we continue to exhaust all lines of enquiries to find the person or people responsible."
Miss Richardson's family released a statement which said: "This has been a devastating loss and we are all in a state of shock. Judith was a wonderful person and we all loved her dearly."
A man and a woman were arrested in connection with Miss Richardson's death on Sunday.
Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed any suspicious behaviour while travelling on public transport from Hexham to Newcastle on Friday afternoon. DCI Paul Young said: "We want to speak to anyone who may have taken a bus or train from the Hexham area on Friday afternoon and witnessed anything unusual.
"If you witnessed anything untoward at any of the Hexham transport stations or on arrival at Newcastle, we urge you to contact police.
"We are also keen to speak to any taxi drivers in the area who may have noticed anything or made a journey from Hexham to Newcastle on Friday."

Woman Charged With Supermarket Murder
A woman has been charged in connection with the murder of a man in a supermarket. Fifty-seven-year-old Kevin Tripp was pushed to the ground while queuing up inside Sainsbury's in Merton, south west London on Tuesday. He was taken to St. George's Hospital in Tooting where he died on Wednesday night.
