Man Jailed For Death By Careless Driving
A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to eight months imprisonment having previously been found guilty at Wood Green Crown Court of causing the death of Elizabeth Beach-MacGeagh by careless driving.
Aryeris Angelis, of Tewkesbury Terrace, New Southgate in north London pleaded guilty to failing to stop after an accident.
A charge of failing to report an accident was ordered to lie on file.
Detective Sergeant Cheryl Frost of the Road Death Investigation Unit said: "Angelis has demonstrated a complete lack of morals, running a young woman over and just driving off.
"By working with the media and the public, we were able to ensure that Angelis was identified, the evidence was available to put before the courts and Angelis has been held to account.
"I would like to thank everyone who has assisted this investigation and Lizzie's family who have supported the police throughout."
The court heard that Elizabeth Beach-MacGeagh, known as Lizzie, 20, a history student at Bristol University, was out jogging when she crossed Netherlands Road at the junction of Temple Avenue in East Barnet at approximately 8.00pm on Wednesday, 16 June 2010.
Angelis, who was driving a BMW 3 series, came round the corner ignoring the slow signs and was in collision with Lizzie.
The police and London Ambulance Service were quickly on scene and Lizzie taken to hospital where sadly she later died.
The Metropolitan Police Service, Road Death Investigation Unit immediately launched an investigation, determined to identify the person responsible.
Using their expertise officers were able to establish from a small fragment of plastic left at the scene the exact model of the vehicle involved and turned to the media and the public for their assistance in identifying the driver of the BMW.
Following the media appeals, Angelis attended Colindale Police Station and handed himself in.
He was subsequently arrested and charged as above.
The jury were unable to reach a decision on a charge of perverting the course of justice.
