Tyson's Release 'Was A Mistake'

Authorities in Florida have said the release of a 16-year-old, who was later arrested over the murders of two British men, was a mistake.

Shawn Tyson was held in Sarasota on 7 April after shots were fired at a car. He was later released and hours later was arrested over the holiday-makers murders.

James Kouzaris, 24, from Northampton, and James Cooper, 25, of Warwick were found shot dead early in the Newtown area of northern Sarasota, away from the known tourist area.

A judge expressed concern that the 16-year-old posed a danger to the public but his warning was not forwarded on to a second judge who later released him on 15 April.

The Mayor of Sarasota, Kelly Kirschener, said: "Obviously there was a significant failure there and it is a conversation that they are having.

"The state prosecutor's office has already said that they will ensure nothing like that will ever happen again.

"That's no consolation for the families and we accept that, but there was certainly a breakdown there as well."

Tyson is expected to be charged with the murders in early May.
