Green Reacts To 'Disturbing' Trafficking Case
The Immigration Minister has said that the government is taking positive steps to ensure it remains a world leader in the fight against human trafficking.
Responding to the case of a Moldovan trafficking victim who received damages from the government this week, he explained that the rights of victims have now been strengthened.
Minister Damian Green said: “This very disturbing case shows why our approach to human trafficking has changed significantly since 2003.
“In recognition of the need to identify victims of trafficking the UK ratified and brought into force the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking.”
Subject to scrutiny by Parliament, the UK has also applied to opt-in to the EU Directive on human trafficking.
The Minister added: “We have also introduced a National Referral Mechanism to refer and identify victims of trafficking and established mandatory training for all frontline UK Border Agency staff on human trafficking awareness.
“The UK has become a world leader in fighting trafficking and has a strong international reputation in this field.”

Man Jailed For 'Horrific' Trafficking Offences
A man has been jailed for human trafficking and prostitution offences. Imre Orsos, 40, of Chorley Old Road, was sentenced to five years and three month's imprisonment after pleading guilty to two counts of trafficking persons into the UK for sexual exploitation and controlling prostitution for gain.

Woman Guilty Of Human Trafficking
A housewife who kept a Tanzanian woman as a modern-day slave in her Harrow bungalow has been sentenced after being found guilty of human trafficking. Saeeda Khan, a 68-year-old widow was found guilty of one count of trafficking people for exploitation under the Asylum and Immigration Act 2004 at Southwark Crown Court.

Human Trafficking Now To Carry Life Sentence
The government have announced new sentencing for those convicted of human trafficking and exploitation, now carrying a maximum life sentence. It follows a pledge by Home Secretary Theresa May to introduce tougher sanctions after a 25% increase in the number of cases of human trafficking uncovered in the UK.

International Trafficking Ring Smashed
An organised human trafficking gang, which had been bringing women into the UK and Ireland for prostitution, has been dismantled. The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), in partnership with the PSNI, An Garda Siochana, Dyfed Powys Police and UK Border Agency disrupted the crime gang who were trafficking women from Brazil, Nigeria and Namibia.

Conservatives call for action on human trafficking
The Conservatives have called for Britain to sign up to a European convention on action against human trafficking. Shadow Home Secretary David Davis also called for the introduction of a border police force and tighter airport checks on women and children travelling without a partner, guardian or parent.
