Night Stalker Convicted

A 53-year-old man, dubbed the Night Stalker, who terrorised the elderly in a 17-year long campaign of burglary and sexual assault, has been convicted at Woolwich Crown Court today.

Delroy Grant, of Brockley, south east London, was charged with 29 counts, which included rape, burglary and indecent assault.

Police described his crimes as "awful and disturbing" and apologised for missing chances which could have stopped him.

They linked Grant to incidents involving 203 separate surviving victims - but fear his actual number of victims could be as many as 600. They think many of his victims may have died without reporting what had happened.

Speaking outside court, Commander Simon Foy said: “Today has seen Delroy Grant brought to justice for the terrible crimes that he committed.

“Firstly though I take this opportunity to pay tribute to his victims and recognise the traumatic experiences they have been through. They have shown immense courage and dignity throughout the investigation despite having suffered such terrifying ordeals.

He added: “Grant is a perverted callous and violent individual - he is a sexual predator, he is a rapist, he is a night time burglar who preyed on the most vulnerable section of our society. He has said nothing to us about his offending and has not as far as we know shown any sign of remorse for what he has done.”

Commander Simon Foy concluded: “Again I would like to pay tribute to the courage of Delroy Grant's victims, some of whom I have met this morning and some of whom sadly are not alive today to see him convicted, and to hope that they and their families will feel a sense of relief that he has been caught and brought to justice.”

Grant will be sentenced on Friday, 25 March.
