UK's Japanese Rescue Team 'Sent Home'

UK rescue workers, en-route to aid those affected by the Japanese quake, have had to turn back after they failed to secure the necessary paperwork from the British embassy in Tokyo.

A spokesman for The International Rescue Corps said it was "gut-wrenching" to be stopped from helping by "your own country".

The team were not granted permission to carry out work in Japan because the embassy would be held legally responsible for them.

Prime Minister, David Cameron said: "There was an extra, independent rescue team that didn't have the correct documentation and so they did encounter some problems.” He added: “We are doing everything we can to make sure that they can get access.”

The quake, which took place on Friday measuring a massive 8.9 on the Richter scale, triggered a tsunami killing thousands and leaving more than 400,000 people homeless. Survivors are now facing freezing temperatures and aftershocks, as well as food, power, and fuel shortages.

A nuclear emergency has also been called after a power plant, 140 miles from Tokyo was affected.
