Man Jailed For Murder Of 88-Year-Old Woman

A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to 32 years in prison after being found guilty of the murder of an 88-year-old woman in Charlton.

Police were called on Saturday, 15 May 2010 to a flat in Valiant House, Sam Bartram Close in south east London, following concerns for the welfare of resident Irene Barrett, 88.

Officers gained entry and found Irene's lifeless body. The post-mortem examination gave cause of death as multiple stab wounds.

The court heard that Daniel Franklin, 34, of Abbeywood, arrived at Irene Barratt's flat just before 7am on the morning of the murder.

His primary intention was to steal money.

Irene let him in and he attacked her and ransacked the flat. Amongst the property stolen were her rings (taken from her fingers) and a packet of Mirtazapine tablets.

He conducted a vicious and prolonged assault on Irene possibly because he requested money and she refused or because she caught him stealing. He stabbed Irene repeatedly in the chest, neck and groin area, and struck her in the mouth, dislodging and fracturing her dentures. He then hid her body under her bedclothes where she was found by her neighbours and her carers a few hours later.

On 17 May officers went to Franklin's house to arrest him mainly because of his ability to access Irene's flat as a window cleaner and because of the suspicions that he had been stealing from her. During police interviews Franklin said that on the Friday night he had been at his girlfriend's house watching a film.

His girlfriend, Victoria Cordice, 31, backed up this story to police.

She pleaded guilty on the 9 February 2011 at The Old Bailey to perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender.

Franklin was arrested on 17 May 2010 and subsequently charged with murder. Following a two and a half week trial the jury returned a majority guilty verdict.

Speaking after the verdict DCI Cliff Lyons said: “This was a horrific crime that saw the death of an elderly woman in her own home. Irene's family has been left absolutely devastated and I only hope that seeing Daniel Franklin brought to justice will provide some sense of relief.”
