Assange Faces Extradition To Sweden

Following a hearing two weeks ago, a judge has ruled that Julian Assange should be extradited to Sweden to face sexual assault allegations.

The Wikileaks founder is now set to appeal against the ruling made at Belmarsh Magistrates' Court, in south London.

The 39-year-old denies the allegations of two sexual assaults and one of rape last August in Stockholm, and said the investigation is politically motivated.

Earlier this month, the UK extradition hearing was told that criticism of Mr Assange, made by Sweden's Prime Minister, could affect his chance of a fair trial.

Geoffrey Robertson QC, who represents the Wikileaks founder, said Fredrik Reinfeldt's comments expressed "complete contempt for the presumption of innocence".

However the Swedish authorities' lawyer denied this would affect Mr Assange's trial.

In December, after spending nine days in Wandsworth prison, Mr Assange was released on bail by a High Court judge.

Earlier this month, Mr Robertson highlighted his concerns due to extensive press coverage leading to a "trial by media".
