'Momentous Change' For Middle East, Says Cameron

The British Prime Minister has said that momentous changes are taking place in the Middle East and North Africa.

Speaking to the Kuwaiti Parliament, David Cameron said in the wake of the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt that "history was sweeping" through the region.

He described the protests as "brave and peaceful" by people "hungry for political and economic freedom" and said the world had been "shocked" by the actions of the Libyan leadership.

He added: "Violence is never an answer to people's legitimate aspirations."

In the last week around 233 people have died in Libya.

In a state television appearance last night, Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi, who is clinging on to power, criticised "rumours" that he had fled to Venezuela and maintained he was still in located in Tripoli.

Mr Cameron said that only freedom, justice and the rule of law would allow countries to meet the aspirations of their young populations.

The Prime Minister is attending ceremonies marking the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait following Iraq's invasion which sparked the first Gulf War.
